Wavy hair girls know it can be a real challenge to brush wavy hair without it getting frizzy. You want it to look neat, but still maintain those great natural waves. But as soon as you brush, the wave straightens out and the poof arrives. It took me way longer than it should have to learn the ultimate secret.
The best way to brush wavy hair is to NOT brush wavy hair!
That’s right. If you have wavy hair you really should almost never brush it! Here’s what to do instead.
Start strong
With wavy hair, it is usually thirsty. This is predominately why it’s so frizzy in the first place. So you want to use shampoos and conditioners without harsh silicones and sulfates, and choose moisturizing formulas.
Once a week or even a bit less, you can use a clarifying formula to remove any build up.
The shower is where you “brush”
In the shower when hair is wet and conditioned is when you want to “brush” your hair. To do this, you want to use a very wide tooth comb. I like one like the one below, so that I can easily hang it on my shower rod.
After “brushing”
Once I comb, I carefully loop it in a clip while I finish the rest of my shower so that the conditioner has some time to penetrate. You want to rinse in as cool of water as you can stand (which is not very cool for me). Then I will put the tiniest less than pea size amount of conditioner back on my hair. Or sometimes I will just rub whatever remains of the Rosehip Seed oil on my hands that I used on my face into my hair. Be careful, a little bit goes a long way! You can also just use a leave in conditioner, but I don’t really see how that’s much different than just leaving in my conditioner, *shrug*. If you have fine, wavy hair you don’t want to weigh it down too much. Be sure not to rub any conditioner or oil on the top part of your head or it will look greasy.
Towel off
Last step for my wavy hair gals is to dry your hair. Do not rub! You want to use a microfiber towel and gently squeeze the moisture out of your hair.
Accentuate those waves!
Now if you choose to, this would be the time to add a curl enhancing mousse. I’m a big fan of this one.
Simply work it through your hair when mostly wet with a comb or even better, your fingers. Then flip your head over and scrunch it up in your hands or with your towel.
Or you can simply tie your hair up gently in a messy bun, or put your hair in braids and that will create great waves!
Resist the urge!
Now comes the hard part, fighting the voice in your head telling you to brush your hair. When it gets a little unruly, all you want to do is finger comb! I wouldn’t even recommend a wide comb once your hair is dry, but if you must. Do NOT use a paddle brush or regular hair brush. After a bit of time your hair will actually become more cooperative. It will have less breakage and will naturally look smoother.
And that’s it, your complete guide on how to brush wavy hair without it getting frizzy!
